AVULSED
Dreams come true

AVULSED is really powerful and interesting band, but because of belonging to underground and remoteness of Spain there were few hopes to see them in Russia. Coyote has acted in a role of the wizard and organized two gigs in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. AVULSED had many adventures. You can read in interview about some events. Besides the Moscow gig has been suddenly transferred to the pavilion of All-Russia Exhibition Centre. Spaniards liked the place, they made photos and video of each other on a background of big Lenin monument, but the club obviously has not been designed for the crowd came there. It turned into sauna with absence of fresh air. After one hour of playing in such atmosphere the drummer has lost consciousness, and it was necessary to interrupt a concert. But the show had cost tortures! Dave has shown mad action like singing in fans’ embrace and flying on hands above crowd. I promised him to make the conclusion about brutality of AVULSED live sound, and here it is. This is real meat! The live sound is an order more powerful then albums. And melodic passages catch extremely, especially pauses in songs.

– Before arrival to Russia you have written at your site that to play here is more difficult, than in Japan. What did you mean, and what did you expect?
– Dave Rotten (vocal): I wrote that, because many bands play in Japan, there is the big stage, but not many foreign bands reach Russia. We had some problems with visas too, tickets are quite expensive, but cheaper, than to Japan. People in Europe think that Russia is very near, so tickets should be cheaper. Actually it is more expensive, than play in US. But we expected craziest fans here. Yesterday in Saint Petersburg it was justified, we have enjoyed. So today’s gig will be killer.

– It’s your third day in Russia. What you could see in Moscow and Saint Petersburg? Did you taste Russian food?
– Dave Rotten: Not really. We were in Moscow one day before, walked around and visited Red Square.

– Did you see Lenin in the Mausoleum?
– Dave Rotten: Yes, certainly. Yesterday we took a van and went to Saint Petersburg. Then we played and went back. So we did not see anything in Saint Petersburg, only the city through the car windows. We were only four hours in Saint Petersburg. We arrived to Moscow this morning, slept four hours, take a shower and came here.

– I know also that you got stuck in the lift today.
– Dave Rotten: Ah yeah!

– What emotions you felt?
– Dave Rotten: We were joking all the day. When we stopped we said «Oh shit!» and imagined histories like «AVULSED stayed six hours in the lift ». No. We spent only half an hour there. We looked some pictures,
recorded video inside the lift… It was fun.

– AVULSED will celebrate 15 years soon, and recently you released mini-album «Reanimations». Was it dedicated to the anniversary, or you will release something else special?
– Dave Rotten: We don’t know. We are not going to do anything special for 15 years. As for "Reanimations" it is mini-CD but with 9 bonus tracks that is AVULSED songs played by others. It is something between one album and other. If today's gig shooting will turn out well, we will release DVD.

– You are preparing historical DVD for a long time. The work has been postponed till the current year because of high concert activity. Is it still in plans or you started to compile material?
– Dave Rotten: Yes we are compiling the stuff and sometimes we will make double DVD about our history with shows all around the world. Of cause, Russia will be there.

– I know that you planned to release not mini-CD but two albums - one disk with covers and one live album. Why it did not happen? You had absence of time?
– Dave Rotten: Yes because we had to do 15 covers, but that would take more than a year. We decided only to do three covers, two new songs and rerecord old one. So we can spend more time making new songs for the next album. We prefer it to work on covers.

– At merchandise page of your site I saw beautiful naked girl who show t-shirt. Is it real photo?
– Dave Rotten: Unfortunately not. I found picture of the girl with t-shirt somewhere in the Internet and put AVULSED on it. Looks great anyway!!

– Can we expect more pictures of naked girls with another AVULSED t-shirts or different merchandise?
– Dave Rotten: Hopefully. All nice girls should have AVULSED goods!

– What is your opinion about low price editions of your CDs? Two Russian labels have released licensed editions of AVULSED albums and sell it at half world price. It’s cool for ordinary fans but some hard people think that it’s semi-piracy.
– Dave Rotten: No, it is totally official. All AVULSED albums have been officially released in Russia and “Reanimations” will be released also by Coyote Records. We are happy to have label here in Russia that can release cheap disks because imported ones would be expensive.

– You use in your music different elements not only brutal but also melodies, sympho intros. Some fans say that it makes your band not brutal.
– Dave Rotten: After the show you can conclude yourself whether AVULSED brutal or not. Remember my words. I have seen many bands that "br-r-r-r-r" – very brutal on CD but alive they are boring. We mix melody and brutality because it makes music more interesting, I think. But on the stage AVULSED kills!

– At singing you often use «Y?!».
– Dave Rotten: Ha-ha-ha. Do it more harshly. Yo!

– Is it your invention or you heard it probably in hip-hop?
– Dave Rotten: Perhaps at the very beginning it was influence of a band from Holland called DISSECT. I don’t know. I always use it. It’s something like AVULSED must have “Yo!” in every song on every album. It is the essential element of AVULSED.

– I have read at your site, that drummer Riky plays in CHRIST DENIED.
– Dave Rotten: No, he will play.

– Does it means that CHRIST DENIED will play gigs?
– Dave Rotten: We never played live and, I think, we will not, because guitar player is living in Germany. So it’s difficult.

– Are you going to record a new album?
– Dave Rotten: Yes, we will record next album with Ricky on drums, but I don’t know when.

– In one interview I have read, that high growth promotes deep growl.
– Dave Rotten: I don’t think so. Growling is just a matter of practice.

– Do you notice distinction of an audience at gigs in the different countries, different proportions of men and women?
– Dave Rotten: Yes. In Spain and Europe there are not many girls at the shows, but in Russia I see more girls, and that is good! We need more death metal girl fans.

– How often you play for many thousands crowd?
– Dave Rotten: We don’t play really big gigs, normally not. Only in Spain we have played two big festivals with about ten or fifteen thousand people. We prefer club gigs, it’s much better for us.

– I read at Xtreem Music site your review of HYPOCRISY album “The Arrival ” and it was very critical.
– Dave Rotten: Yes. I’m very critical to big bands.

– You don’t like melodic death?
– Dave Rotten: No, I don’t hate melodic death. I think HYPOCRISY is overrated band. For me it is normal band, but they have Peter Tagtgren and big promotion by Nuclear Blast. To me there is nothing especial.

– What do you think about Russian bands that you saw in Saint Petersburg and here in Moscow?
– Dave Rotten: In Saint Petersburg I noticed MISANTHROPE COUNT MERCYFUL. They are very good and powerful live. They had played HYPOCRISY cover. And in Moscow it’s ANAL NOSOROG. They sound like CBT, very catchy goregrind. It was very good.

– Russian bands have some problems to sign contracts with foreign labels because of impossibility to play gigs outside, it’s quite expensive. What you can recommend them for promotion? Is it necessary to take part in big European festivals?
– Dave Rotten: They have to send recorded albums to different foreign labels before Russian labels and then wait for their interest. I know some Russian bands signed at foreign labels. I released second album of ROSSOMAHAAR on my label.

– And why you didn’t release another albums of ROSSOMAHAAR?
– Dave Rotten: On the third album I did not like a saxophone and ska music elements.

– It was just experiment. You did experiments to on “Cybergore” for example.
– Dave Rotten: Yes, but it was not really album, it was disk of remixes. ROSSOMAHHAR recorded full album with new songs.

– Thank you for this interview and for arrival to Russia from all AVULSED fans.
– Dave Rotten: We are very proud to play in Russia. For us it’s like a dream to play here, because we never expected it. Even if we are having hard times without sleep and food we enjoy very much.

– We will wait for next AVULSED gigs.
